This morning we analyze the approach of Mei Shiloach by the Ishbitzer Rebbe in understanding the sin of the spies. Using a brilliant analogy from Bailey Newman concerning the early life of Vincent Van Gogh, we explain the sin of the spies was looking at Israel superficially, not seeing the depth and passionate holiness beneath the rough surface. We, like Israel and Torah and God and each other, crave been seen fully and deeply. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
