Swim Safety, What We Have Learned About Keeping Our Autistic Kids Safe in the Water.
We discuss what we learned about keeping our kids safe in the water. All of our autistic kids are drawn to water. Water regulates their system and also can lead to some scary situations. We discuss some of the challenges we have had keeping our kids safe around water. Here are some tips on how we do that.
As summer is approaching and we all venture out to pools, lakes, and other bodies of water, we thought it would be good to discuss swim safety. Frequently, we follow our kids into the water and make sure all eyes are as alert as possible.
Children with autism spectrum disorder are 160 times more likely to experience nonfatal and fatal drowning than their typically developing peers. This is due to their natural affinity towards water and tendency to elope.
