166. What is Purity?

Welcome to episode #166! This week, Matt and Braden talk about purity. What is purity? Why does it matter for us? 

Purity is more than just sexual. 

Purity is more than just behavior. We need to be pure in our motives and in our language; we need to be honest and have integrity. The indicator of impurity is the behavior, but having the impurity out of our life is not just the behavior. You can be free from the sin, but still have a messed up or have impurities in your heart. God wants your heart. He wants to give you purity, love and fulfillment through him. “Cleanse your hands and purify your heart.” Get rid of the behavior, but also purify your heart. 

Behavior modification - you need an inward change to have an outward change. 

When we focus only on the outward, we become very performance driven. We can be outwardly looking pure, but not pure on the inside. Jesus called out the Pharisees for appearing like “whitewashed tombs” - outwardly appearing a certain way, but inside they were still full of death. We are made pure only by what Jesus has done for us on the cross. When we receive that, we take it in and our outward behavior begins to reveal that inward reality. Draw to Jesus, and allow him to change your heart. 

Impurity is not just sin - it is anything out of alignment with what God says. 

If we are carrying guilt, shame or insecurity that he doesn’t want us to carry, that's an impurity that hinders what we can do for the kingdom of God. We need to humble ourselves and receive God’s opinion about us. When we receive that opinion, we receive His grace and when we receive his grace, we are able to walk in it. That is where we start walking in the purity that God has for us. Even though we have sinned and screwed up, we can still receive what God has for us. We can live out of the truth of what Jesus did for us on the cross.
