Episode 155: The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1920)

This week at The Film Club we’re kicking off a new month with a new theme and new series: Foreign Films Month! Our first installment is the German expressionist film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. The film tells the story of Best Friends Francis and Alan who are visiting a carnival, they encounter a peculiar man named Dr. Caligari who is one of the acts at the carnival. Caligari wows the crowd with a hypnotized man named Cesare that he keeps in a cabinet and when Cesare is awoken he can predict the future. Alan takes the opportunity to challenge Cesare and asks when he will die, much to Alan’s surprise Cesare responds with by morning. Francis is devastated the next day when he learns that Alan has been murdered and he’s determined that Cesare is the murderer. But is Cesare really guilty? Join us as we dive into the world of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.
