In May of 1905, a 26-year old clerk in Bern, Switzerland was on his nightly commute home from work. As was his usual routine, he boarded the trolley and made himself comfortable for the relaxing ride home. The clerk found himself deep in thought and engrossed in a nagging question that he had been unable to solve for years. The trolley navigated its way through the center of town and past Bern’s famous clock tower – known as the Zytglogge or “time bell.” It had been constructed in the 1200s as part of the medieval city’s west gate. The actual clock itself dates from the 1400s and had dominated the Swiss city’s primary square since then. At that moment, as the trolley passed by the clock, and the tired clerk’s eyes fell on the clock tower, the answer to the question that had vexed him for years, suddenly came to him and the world would change – forever.
