130: 10 Lessons Learned in 10 Years of Entrepreneurship

10 Lessons in 10 Years of Business There is no race to run.

A lesson I’m constantly having to remind myself of is that there is no race to run. You are not behind no matter where you are in business. The race you’re imagining is self-imposed. There is no age that is too late for you to shift, change, or even start.

Be discerning about who you take advice from.

Not every person that you get advice from will be the right person. Be intentional and discerning in who the person is when you do decide to accept advice. You need to trust the person who actually understands your vision.

Do it anyway (even when you’re fearful).

As an enneagram three, I feel really strongly about accomplishments and how people felt when I worked with them. I struggle with fears in comparison, self-doubt, failure, and so much more. Those fears can hold us back, but do it anyway. Push yourself forward in entrepreneurship.

You can’t make everyone happy all the time.

While it’s understandable to be a people pleaser, as the boss of your business, you’ll quickly learn that you can’t make everyone happy all the time. Through tough situations and hard decisions, you will run into situations where you will let others down.

You can’t discount the experience that you’ve built in your life ahead of entrepreneurship.

Don’t discount what you’re bringing to the table from other industries. You have a vast knowledge of experience from the work you’ve done in the past and the life you’ve lived until now that can benefit your business in whatever role you go next.

Some people won’t be your people while others will.

In an industry where connection and networking are so valuable, you will find that some people won’t be your people. That is okay. This is your permission to accept that you won’t hit it off with everyone—sometimes even the people you’re really excited to connect with. On the flip side, sometimes the people that you never expected to connect with can become your business besties—embrace that.

Stop consuming content so that you can create content.

Sometimes we have to hit the breaks on our consumption of content. Overconsumption of content is real, making it nearly impossible to create unique and custom content that benefits our audience and our business.

You can do it all if you’re multi-passionate (you just can’t do it all at once).

I believe that multi-passionate people can succeed in every aspect of their passions, yet that can’t do it all at once. Try things at different times and know that nothing is permanent.

Building relationships are important, so show up & get real.

It is so important to build relationships and show up; this could be in group coaching programs, online, in-person events, and so much more. When you show up and let your defenses down, that is the best and biggest catalyst for personal and professional growth.

If you want to be a leader, start leading now.

The easiest way to become a leader is to start leading now. Don’t wait for permission, start working from an ethical place of passion and impact.

There is nothing wrong with being in a time of hustle, hard work, and exhaustion, yet rest is a necessity, not a reward. There are times when this is okay because sometimes that is how we need to show up in our businesses.
