Cattle prices are on the rise. And that's great news for beef producers who have had to suffer through stagnant prices over the last few years while meat prices soared. Richard Brown with Tennessee livestock producers says he's seeing the highest prices of video sales he's ever seen
Richard Brown
The last time the cycle was probably at an all time high would have been back in 2014 or 2015. And it's been eight years since that high came and and now we're seeing another all time high in 2023. We're seeing you know steers heavyweight steer calves. So several those heavyweight steer calves last Friday probably would have bring somewhere between 19 to $2,100 a piece.

The reason for the jump in prices comes down to supply and demand.
Richard Brown
The cow numbers are down across the nation. We're probably going to be in a in a rebuilding phase or coming into a rebuilding phase because we have we've sold off a lot of cows and in the last 18 months.

Hickman County cattle producer John West just recently sold cattle at the Columbia United producers video sell and got 20 cents more per pound compared to a year ago. The bump in profit for West is a big win especially considering the high inflation he's been dealing with.
John West
ll of our input costs for have gone through you know interest fuel, feed, everything's gone way up. You know in some cases, almost double, not quite but close. We need more money just to maintain to be where we can hold our own and you know, and little extra to stay in basements.
Thomas Capps
What goes up will more than likely come back down eventually. But West is going to enjoy the good times for now.
John West
It is cyclic they will in usually 10 years the prices are high and then they get low and then they finally get higher again.
