This segment is about discrimination towards a trans man who finds a deeper connection to his faith through activism. Zayn had applied to a Christian educational institution, and was denied for being trans, he has been battling them in court, but was ultimately denied.
U.S District Court Ann Aiken dismissed Silva's case in January, Ann Aiken was appointed by Bill Clinton. He wrote that the exception appeared to be related to the government's objective of accommodating religious exercise and that Congress did not appear to have discriminatory intent when it approved the language.
But LGBTQ protections are not guaranteed at all. This is a distinction that the religious hide behind when they discriminate against LGBTQ people, and it is entirely legal. We're seeing the government actually saying they can discriminate because their religion says that they can, their god, their belief is saying that you are an abomination therefore they are allowed to discriminate against you because it would be an infringement on their religious beliefs.Title IX does bar certain discrimination but not for this. I know the Biden administration is making an attempt to rectify that but they're facing an uphill battle on the court.
Even without the whole bigotry casting its ugly fingers on every aspect of this story it isrepulsive. It highlights a real problem, over four billion dollars a year of taxpayers money goes to religious institutions.
One of the simplest ways to resolve this is by getting Federal funding out of all religious schools. Let's not put a single dime into religious schools. If they want to have something religious, pay for it without the taxpayers.
One major issue with more liberal interpretations of Christianity is it oftentimes gives a layer of legitimacy to really horrible thing. Most of us come from religious background, we're hardwired into that guilt, guilt is part the package.
Unfortunately, in a pattern that we see time and again with victims of abuse, Zayn has clung to his abuser god even more. Religion ingrains you with guilt, fear, and self-loathing. So why not accept the abuse and just keep coming back for more?
Zayn specifically said that because he and his community are being discriminated against has caused him to fall back on his faith even more. This is the same rhetoric that was said about the civil rights movement in the 1950s and 60s, people were marching, singing we shall overcome, keep your eyes on the prize, and god's gonna work it out.
Being so wrapped up in your indoctrination allows this whole talking point to a be an abusive point.
What Zayn went through is absolutely horrendous, the story about getting that call where he wasn't accepted with the excuse of “we appreciate your honesty but no, stay away from us” was painful.
To Zayn and other LGBTQIA activists who are pushing for inclusivity in Christian Schools so they can be ordained and receive accolades. Good luck and a bit of advice, you think that you are running on faith but you don't need faith. You need a whole team of Thurgood Marshals.
