This morning we explain, based on an essay by Shira Smiles, how the sound of the Shofar during the month of Ellul (distinct from the hearing Shofar on Rosh Hashana itself), is the roar of a lion, urging us to prepare for the approach of God, and startling us to plan the changes we want to make within ourselves this High Holiday season. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
