In 1843, Upper Canada was rocked by a grisly crime that would later be adapted into a Margaret Atwood novel and a CBC television show -the wealthy Thomas Kinnear and his housekeeper Nancy Montgomery were found murdered, and their servants Grace Marks and James McDermott stood accused of the crime. To this day, Grace Marks remains one of the most controversial figures in Canadian history. Was she a cold-blooded murderer? Or was she just a scared girl in the wrong place at the wrong time?
