SF special election; Gray wolves’ receive protections; Gas company profits and new CA tax proposals; Plus, eviction protections
0:08 – San Francisco is coming up on another special election, this time to fill the vacant seat in the 17th Assembly District, which is in the eastern portion of the city — a position formerly occupied by David Chiu. We speak with the two candidates who are going into a runoff vote on April 17th: David Campos (@DavidCamposSF), who is Vice Chair of the Democratic Party and former District 9 Supervisor in San Francisco; and Matt Haney (@MattHaneySF), currently serving as San Francisco Supervisor for District 6 which is the Tenderloin and east of there.
0:34 – In February, a federal court reversed a decision to strip protections for gray wolves, a decision which gives the animals endangered species protections. We are joined by Kristen Boyles (@krisboyles), an Earthjustice attorney who defended the gray wolves in federal court.
0:52 – California’s gas taxes are amongst the highest in the nation. California State Assemblymember Alex Lee (@alex_lee) who represents the 25th Assembly District in San Jose, is bringing a legislative amendment to offer consumer rebates as a result of a new tax on windfall profits by oil companies.
1:08 – The state is considering continuing some covid-related eviction protections for people who apply for the protections by March 31. Leah Simon-Weisberg (@leahfsw), Legal Director for Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, speaks with us about what this means for tenants.
