In this episode, Miriam introduces actor and activist Fran Drescher (American, born 1957), who overcame personal challenges and used her platform, over and over again, to raise awareness about women's health issues. The hosts review her journey from actress to activist to most recently, president of SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), which showcases the power of using one's platform for social change. Next, Lavetta introduces human trafficker Sister Ping (Chinese, 1949–2014), also known as Cheng Chui Ping, who operated in the 1980s and 1990s. She was the leader of an illegal organization that smuggled thousands of Chinese immigrants into the United States, and her connections with the Fujianese gang allowed her to expand her criminal activities. She charged exorbitant fees to those who wished to enter the US illegally, and placed them in low-paying jobs to pay off their debts. Despite her illegal activities, Sister Ping was seen as a hero by many in the Chinese community for helping them escape poverty. She was eventually arrested, convicted, and sentenced to 35 years in prison.
