Sam Altman mentioned, "One significant lesson he learned building OpenAI, is to capture a large part of the smallest possible market, rather than go too broad with the initial addressable market."
In this interview, Francois shared his inspirational international journey from France to India, Hong Kong and Singapore; pivoting his way from an Engineering Consultant at Schneider Electric to the startup executive at honestbee and ShopBack; lastly his top advice for scaling products.
1️⃣ Rather than go big and wide, trying to be the #superapp from day 1. I advise 2c product leaders to 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐞𝐝 on one good thing you are doing well. Focus on a market where users desperately need what you are doing, take over that market, then you can expand from there.
2️⃣ 𝐈𝐧𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐲. When the company starts to scale, simply expanding your team, operations, logistics... will never suffice the exponential growth. This is the time you need simplification. You need to exhaust possible ways to decode and find the easiest and quickest way to catch up with the expansion complexity.
3️⃣ 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐤 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝐛𝐲 𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐩. entrepreneurship is always being associated with risk-taking.
