Mary Ann Britland was the first woman to be executed by hanging at Strangeways Prison in Manchester, England, for three murders. She poisoned her daughter, husband, and her lover's wife in order to marry her lover. The murders were committed using rat poison containing strychnine and arsenic. Britland was charged with all three murders and was found guilty. She was executed on August 9th, 1886.
