s3 e7 — GRISELDA BLANCO (Part 1) and KATE WARNE: Crack is wack!
This week, Lavetta begins the story of the life and deeds of the Notorious “Godmother of Cocaine,” Griselda Blanco; and Miriam recounts the remarkable life of America’s first female detective, Kate Warne.

In this episode, Lavetta introduces drug lord Griselda Blanco (Columbian, 1943–2012) (this is Part 1 of 2, Part 2 is in the next episode, s3 e8). Known as the Queen of Cocaine, Blanco rose to power in the 1970s and 1980s. Born into poverty in Colombia, she began her criminal career at a young age, engaging in kidnapping and other illegal activities. She eventually became involved in the cocaine trade and established a vast empire, smuggling drugs into the United States, starting with Miami. Blanco's reign of violence and ruthlessness made her a feared figure in the criminal underworld. Next, Miriam introduces Kate Warn (American, 1833–1868), the first female detective hired by the Pinkerton Detective Agency. Significant to Warn's legacy was the crucial role she played in foiling an assassination plot on Abraham Lincoln during his journey to Washington, D.C.
