How does mental health permeate the medical profession?
This week’s interview is with Dr Edward Lynch, CEO and Co-founder of ‘LYFE’, a lifestyle app created to help integrate a busy lifestyle and a busy schedule to better your health. The idea of LYFE came from two busy physicians working in a fast-paced environment, struggling to consistently fit a healthy lifestyle into a hectic schedule.
Dr Edward Lynch is a full-time Junior Doctor for the NHS, and an advocate for speaking openly about mental health. Ed speaks about his own experiences that lead him to talk publicly about mental health, which later lead to a stronger interest in psychology and models such as the biopsychosocial model.
Ed also discusses the coping aspects of working in the medical field, harnessing emotions for productivity and growth and the way the LYFE app developed in terms of his entrepreneurial journey.
Also discussed:
(1:30) Intro: what it’s like working in the NHS with the coronavirus pandemic, the new emphasis on health, the day-to-day, the humanity element
(11:46) Sense of community, the support between staff and the coping aspect, focusing on what you can control, focusing on ‘today’ and routine
(23:43) Deficit model, focusing on prevention for optimum mental and physical health, the importance of reflection in the form of diaries and vlogs
(30:03) Mental health in the medical profession, taking responsibility for your mental health, Ed’s entrepreneurial experience, the biopsychosocial model, technology and mental health (Lyfe App)
(44:54) Empirical evidence, harnessing specific emotions to increase productivity and teach ourselves something, how challenges promote growth
(1:02:10) The potential for Ed’s mental health app, specifically for individuals who have limited time to plan their week, why and how Ed’s interest in mental health began
(1:11:08) Next steps for those exploring their mental health, including creating a schedule/routine, talking to others and having consistency in self-enquiry, final comments
