Why talk about rejection in a podcast about mental health and wellbeing? Because some of the fastest improvements in our mental wellbeing can be achieved through shoring up our weaknesses. A lot of us struggle with emotional heavyweights that impact us out of nowhere, such as grief and loss. But a lot of us can struggle with the emotional fallout that comes from the everyday choices we make in our day-to-day life. Taking risks can leave us vulnerable to disappointment, embarrassment and, perhaps worst of all, rejection. Choosing to face rejection head on can feel uncomfortable and scary, but it can also build valuable life experience and emotional resilience that will serve us well moving forwards.
I explore my relationship with rejection told through a series of very personal anecdotes to discuss;
- Why rejection hurts so damn much
- The unexpected benefits of rejection
- How rejection can hold a mirror up to our lives to help us look at things more carefully
- How the heaviest rejections don’t always come from others, but are self-administered
- The social side of rejection; how our negative perception of rejection can prevent us from rejecting others, even when it’s the best thing to do
- How rejection raises interesting questions around shame, confidence and worthiness
- The hidden power of rejection (if you take the lessons it teaches you).
