s3 e11 — NAN DAVIS and GERTRUDE BERG: Woman, put that thing away and stop laughing!
This week, Lavetta briefly covers the life of Anti-Masher spokeswoman, Nan Davis while widely covering the “Hatpin Peril” of the Gilded Age; and Miriam covers the astonishing career of OG Comedy star, Gertrude Berg.

In this episode, Lavetta introduces Nan Davis (American, late 19th–early 20th century) as a face to the phenomenon of women fighting back against male harassers during the Gilded Age. Lavetta explains the use of hat pins as a form of self-defense and the societal response to women asserting their autonomy. Next, Miriam highlights the story of actor, producer, and screenwriter Gertrude Berg (American, 1899–1966). Berg was a trailblazing figure in American media, known for her influential radio and television show, The Rise of the Goldbergs, which she created and in which she starred, and that depicted the life of a Jewish family in the Bronx. Berg's success paved the way for greater representation of Eastern European Jewish culture in mainstream American media, as her representation of women challenged societal norms and changed the narrative. However, during the McCarthy era, a period of cultural purge in Hollywood that affected many marginalized groups, Berg's co-star was blacklisted, leading to the cancellation of the show. Despite her accomplishments, Berg's legacy remains relatively unknown.
