Welcome back to Artbeat Radio!
Today, relax and listen to our re-imagined lyrics and original soundscape.
For this first project, the Artbeat Radio class at CECA chose to rewrite Alicia Key’s hit song, “If I Ain’t Got You” but with a sweet twist. Service users in the class provided input and feedback on their favorite desserts, ultimately deciding the main theme of the song would be, “If I Ain’t Got Ice Cream.” Service users wrote the lyrics and decided on the tempo of the song, key, and instrumentation. As you listen to the recording you will hear Jesus Q. open the song with a spelling of the word “ice cream” while Juliet R. joyfully laughs in the background. Maria G. and Michael H. sing loudly through the verses and chorus before the whole class breaks into an instrumental solo section. Maria G., Michael H., and Jesus Q. take turns soloing on the piano, Juliet R. and Jesus Q. hit the drum, and service users in class all take turns playing the shaker. The students then close out the tune with a loud chorus of "yum!"
“Dreaming of Ice Cream”
Some people live for trés leches
Some people live for apple pie
Some people eat dessert for breakfast
like mermelada on French toast
Some people think pizza
Enchiladas and chips
Are the only way to go
And I've had them before
But they just don’t compare
To that magical food
Some people want it all
But I don't want nothing at all
If it ain't you, ice cream
If I ain't got you, ice cream
Some people want carrot cake
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got ice cream
Some people search for a milk shake
They like to drink them
Some people need three dozen flavors
Others just want pink shaved ice
Some people think pizza
Enchiladas and chips
Are the only way to go
And I've had them before
But they just don’t compare
To that magical food
Some people want it all
But I don't want nothing at all
If it ain't you, ice cream
If I ain't got you, ice cream
Some people want carrot cake
Some just want everything
But everything means nothing
If I ain’t got ice cream
"Oceanic Soundscape"
Soundscapes are musical compositions that encompass natural-occurring sounds from specific environments. CECA service users worked collaboratively to create this ocean soundscape featuring percussive and wind instrument recordings combined with environmental sounds to create the breezy and oscillating effects one experiences while visiting the ocean. Instruments such as the ocean drum, native flute, rain stick, and tone blocks were utilized by service users PJ (Lawrence W. III), Kyuta S. , Norberta C., and Jennifer R. to build a soundscape transporting the listener to their ideal beach visit. Service users explored layering and looping techniques to create desired musical effects contributing to the overarching goal of transporting anyone listening to a peaceful, beach day.
