In this episode, Miriam introduces actor and producer Geena Davis (American, born 1956), and highlights her early career, relationships, and iconic movies. The hosts discuss the challenges Davis faced in her career and very admirably, the deep impact of her advocacy work for gender representation in media. Next, Lavetta introduces Phoolan Devi (Indian, 1963–2001), a notorious woman who fought for justice in India. Devi was a woman from a lower caste in India who endured a life of abuse, kidnapping, and rape. She eventually joined a gang and became a notorious bandit — hence her nickname "Bandit Queen" — robbing the rich to give to the poor. Her actions made her a folk hero and a symbol of resistance against the systemic oppression faced by lower castes and women in India. She later entered politics and became a member of Parliament, advocating for the rights of women and the poor. However, her life ended tragically when she was assassinated at the age of 37.
