When you hear 'motivated by murder', it's likely to make you conjure up feelings such as fear, anger, injustice, bitterness and a desire for revenge. But that's not the case for Ken Marslew, (well not now, anyway) whose actions have been motivated and set in motion due to the callous murder of his university-age son Michael, a good kid simply working his shift at Pizza Hut when his killer carried out an armed robbery and took Michael's life in the process.
We spoke to Ken for the first time 18 months ago (Episode 309, Killing Killers With Kindness) and back then he shared deeply the process he went through in the quest to manage grief, come to terms with the emotional roller-coaster and somehow find it within himself to do the incredible work around understanding and rehabilitating (and preventing further) perpetrators of violence.
It's a huge topic and one that, as you can imagine, gets muddied with complex human emotions and subjectivity for whomever is involved. People like Ken Marslew are a rare gift and if you're anything like me, you might find yourself learning a lot of perspective when we listen and empathise with such an experience.
