1. For today, the 1st of November, let's begin with updates from the city. The CWRC instructed Karnataka to release 2,600 cusecs of water to Tamil Nadu, ensuring it reaches Biligundlu from today, November 1st to November 15. Karnataka cited persistent rainfall shortage and declared drought in 216 taluks. They explained their inability to release more water due to low reservoir inflow. Tamil Nadu had demanded 13,000 cusecs.
2. In other headlines, the state BJP announced a statewide study tour to assess Karnataka's drought situation. Starting November 3 and concluding on November 10, the initiative will involve prominent BJP leaders, including ex-CM BS Yeddyurappa and State President Nalin Kumar Kateel. The team, comprising 17 members, will focus on drought-affected regions, particularly evaluating drying lakes and examining bore wells. Each team will tour two districts, enabling a thorough analysis of the drought's impact on local communities and water resources.
3. In some more news, a major fire erupted at SV Coach garage in Bengaluru's Veerabhadra Nagar, engulfing 21 buses. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. About 42 workers were present during the incident. Fire tenders quickly controlled the blaze, suspected to have been caused by a short circuit. Earlier, a similar incident occurred at Haj Bhavan in Bellahalli, causing damage but no casualties due to a suspected short circuit.
4. Up next, the Forest Department has transferred custody of three lakes — Madiwala, Nagawara, and Hebbal — to the BBMP as per an order from the Urban Development Department. The BBMP will now oversee 205 lakes in the city. Bellandur and Varthur Lakes remain under the BDA, while Puttenahalli Lake is retained by the Forest Department due to ongoing litigation. The UDD's order prohibits the BBMP from involving private agencies or engaging in commercial activities at these lakes.
5. Now, onto other news, the upcoming Kambala event at Bengaluru's Palace Grounds on November 25-26 will feature Tulu Nadu's longest Kare (track) in history, measuring 155 meters, surpassing the conventional 145 meters. Puttur MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, also the Bengaluru Kambala Committee president, announced champions will receive Rs 1.50 lakh and two Pawan gold. Winning jockeys get a gold medal, while Kambala owners receive Rs 50,000 for buffalo transportation. Anticipating 7-8 lakh attendees, the police have heightened security.
6. Moving on, spice production in India has surged by 21%, utilizing 10% more agricultural land. However, challenges persist in the industry, including poor soil health and adulteration, according to Dr R. Dinesh, Director of ICAR-IISR. He addressed the 34th annual group meeting of ICAR-AICRP on Spices here in Bengaluru, focusing on growth strategies and innovative solutions. An exhibition featuring spice diversity was also unveiled at the event.
7. Meanwhile, Kalaburagi's innovative 'health ATMs' are gaining popularity, providing thousands with accessible healthcare. Spread across villages and Kalaburagi city, 25 machines offer various health tests. Over 200 people used one facility in a month. These ATMs, a first in Karnataka, conduct over 50 tests, including blood pressure, diabetes, and HIV tests, all within 20-30 minutes. Installed near government healthcare centres, the tests are assisted by medical staff. Reports are accessible via WhatsApp, SMS, or email.
8. On a different note, Bengaluru-based Vaayu Chest & Sleep Services has launched a dedicated free clinic, the 'Respiratory Occupational Health Clinic', offering screenings to vulnerable groups like police, BBMP workers, BMTC ground staff, and exposed construction workers. The clinic recently screened 40 Jayanagar traffic police officials, identifying previously undiagnosed hypertension, allergies, and lung issues. Vital signs, chest, and ENT examinations were conducted, along with lung function tests and prescriptions, ensuring early intervention for respiratory problems.
