Bengaluru Local news
1. For today, the 9th of November, let's begin with updates from the city. Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah criticized BJP's drought study tour, urging them to approach the Central government for immediate relief funds.216 out of 236 taluks in Karnataka are declared drought-hit. Siddaramaiah emphasized that the Central team has already assessed the situation, urging BJP leaders to expedite relief funds. He pointed out the state's request for ₹17,900 crore relief, with actual losses at ₹33,700 crores.
2. In other headlines, Karnataka Home Minister Dr G Parameshwara revealed that Rudragouda D Patil, implicated in the First Division Assistant recruitment test scam, has fled to Maharashtra. Police have been instructed to apprehend him. Over 20 individuals were arrested for using Bluetooth devices during the exam. Patil, also involved in a police sub-inspector recruitment scam, escaped by scaling a wall. Parameshwara assured Patil's capture and warned those aiding his escape.
3. In some more news, in response to heavy rainfall in Bengaluru, BBMP administrator Rakesh Singh convened a meeting, addressing the IMD's forecast of continued rain. He mandated an engineer for each of the 198 wards to monitor and mitigate rain-related issues. Flooding disrupted roads and homes, prompting Deputy CM DK Shivakumar's visit to BBMP's command centre. The BBMP also instructed commissioners to identify affected houses for compensation and investigate flooding causes.
4. Up next, Former Karnataka CM BS Yediyurappa criticized the state's ruling Congress government, deeming it "as good as dead" and accused it of failing in various sectors. He slammed the leadership as "bankrupt" and condemned Congress leaders for opposing PM Modi. Yediyurappa threatened agitation to highlight government failures, particularly in financial management. He emphasized the government's alleged inability to address drought and fulfil poll promises, including salary payments.
5. Now, onto other news, the state government has abandoned the previous BJP administration's plan to transform seven government engineering colleges into Karnataka Institute of Technologies, akin to IITs. Instead, it will upgrade 10 government engineering colleges as 'Institutes of Eminence', securing a soft loan from the World Bank. Minister for Higher Education Dr M C Sudhakar clarified that the earlier IIT-model proposal lacked funding, prompting the shift in focus towards enhancing faculty and infrastructure quality.
6. Moving on, Bengaluru remains the top choice for non-resident Indians investing in the Indian real estate market, according to a report by proptech unicorn NoBroker. The city's cosmopolitan culture, top-notch educational institutions, and thriving startup scene have led to a substantial rise in rental yield, making it an attractive investment destination. Favourable government policies are expected to boost NRI contributions to the sector from 10% in 2019-20 to an estimated 17% by 2025.
7. Meanwhile, Aadhaar biometric fraud differs from typical phishing scams, bypassing links or OTPs. Victims realize this only after receiving unauthorized bank debit messages. Two men in Bengaluru were arrested recently for using publicly available Aadhaar data for theft. Suspects are believed to operate outside the state, obtaining details from public land registration portals. They use techniques like transferring biometrics onto silicone sheets, then utilize apps for Aadhaar Enabled Payment System services to withdraw money.
8. On a different note, Bengaluru's 13-year-old magic prodigy, Jayant Patwari, has gained recognition in the world of illusion, completing 37 shows since his debut for the underprivileged in 2022. Inspired by illusionists like Joshua Jay and Harry Houdini, he practised tirelessly to master tricks. Houdini remains his greatest influence. Jayant aspires to pursue a career in magic, aiming to bring wonder to all, especially those in need. On November 18, he will showcase his talents at a lake revival event in J P Nagar's Puttenahalli Lake.
National News
1. Moving on to the national news. PM Narendra Modi criticized the Congress for corruption, reiterating his '85% commission' claim in Madhya Pradesh. He mocked Mallikarjun Kharge, accusing Congress of remote control leadership. Modi pledged to elevate India's economy to the third position if elected for a third term. He warned of Congress's alleged exploitation of the poor and divisive tactics. Modi also defended his extension of the free ration scheme.

He expressed regret, emphasizing the importance of education for population management and women's empowerment. The BJP criticized Kumar's comments as misogynistic and demanded his resignation, while Union minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey called for immediate medical consultation. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla described Kumar's language as vulgar, indecent, and patriarchal.
3. In more news, Anand Mahindra, the Chairman of Mahindra Group, proposed "Regenerative Agriculture" as an eco-friendly alternative to stubble burning, addressing Delhi's air pollution. The practice emphasizes soil health, boosting food production, carbon storage, and biodiversity. It reduces soil erosion, conserves water, and minimizes ploughing. After a slight improvement to the 'very poor' category, the air quality index in the national capital reverted to 'severe'.
4. Shifting our focus, the National Investigation Agency conducted raids in eight states and two Union Territories in connection with human trafficking cases. The operation spanned Tripura, Assam, West Bengal, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Haryana, Puducherry, Rajasthan, and Jammu and Kashmir. While a person named Mohammad Imran Khan was recently arrested in Tamil Nadu for harbouring Sri Lankan nationals illegally, it remains unclear if these raids are linked to that case.
5. In a general weather update for the country, Delhi's air quality deteriorated, reaching a severe AQI of 424, following morning with shallow fog and mist, reducing visibility to 800 meters. Prominent pollutants are PM2.5 and PM10. The most polluted area was Punjabi Bagh with an AQI of 466. Of 35 monitoring stations, only six were in the very poor range. Stubble burning contributed around 33.07% to pollution. Improved AQI is expected from 10th November.

Police have launched a manhunt for the perpetrators, emphasizing their commitment to protecting officials and the community.
4. In some positive news, recreational use and possession of nitrous oxide, commonly known as 'laughing gas', is banned in Britain. Producing, supplying, or selling the drug now carries hefty prison sentences. While legitimate use in healthcare, dentistry, and other industries is exempt, the government cites nuisance behaviour and health risks as reasons for the ban. Nitrous oxide is popular among young people, but misuse can lead to health issues, including anaemia and nerve damage.
