Unsung Heroes: Jerome Ford, Mike Ford, David Njoku among the UNSUNG HEROES in the Browns BIG win
It all came down to one drive.
With the Cleveland Browns trailing the Baltimore Ravens 31-30 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter on Sunday, Deshaun Watson put the team on his back and led them downfield for a game-winning field goal by Dustin Hopkins.
Cleveland escaped Baltimore with a 33-31 win, and improved to 6-3 on the season.
Deshaun, who struggled in the first half of the game, went a perfect 14-14 in the second half and made every big throw or scramble when it mattered most. For the first time since arriving in Cleveland, DW4 looked like full version of DW4 the Browns hoped they were trading for.
Defensively, Myles Garrett and company held Lamar Jackson in check. Greg Newsome came up with his first career INT, which he returned for a TD in the fourth quarter. Garrett had 1.5 sacks to give him 11 on the season. Denzel Ward got hurt in the first quarter, Mike Ford had to step up, and he also picked off Lamar late in the first half.
The special teams had its up and downs, with Jordan Elliott blocking a FG attempt, James Proche muffing a punt, Dustin Hopkins missing an extra point but drilling the game-winner.
But we'd be silly not to mention the unsung heroes for the Browns in this game. First off, Kevin Stefanski will not let this team quit. Despite being down two TDs at two different points in the game, the Browns never gave up and continually found ways to make plays when it mattered most.
Amari Cooper had his usual stat line, but David Njoku and Elijah Moore both had their best games of the season when it mattered most. Moore finally found the TD late in the 4th quarter to make it a one score game. Njoku carried about 7 Ravens on his back for a few crucial first down conversions in the final minutes as well.
Jerome Ford also had his best game of the year, rushing for 107 yards, while Kareem Hunt extended his rushing TD streak to a league-leading 5.
This is the kind of signature win Kevin Stefanski, Deshaun Watson & the rest of the Browns needed to catapult them forward in the AFC playoff race.
