s4 e2 — SONORA WEBSTER CARVER and NANCY REAGAN: The good, the bad and the problematic!
This week, Miriam tells the amazing story of the old-skool live show entertainer, Sonora Webster Carver; and Lavetta tells the surprising life story of Nancy Reagan.
-----
In this episode, Miriam introduces one of the first horse divers, Sonora Webster Carver (American, 1904–2003). In 1923, at 19 years old, Webster answered an advertisement from William "Doc" Carver. Her job for Doc was to ride a horse up a 40–60 foot tower and stay on the horse as it plunged into a 11-foot deep pool of water. In 1931, as she was diving, she hit the water with her eyes open, and her retina detached. In spite of her complete blindness, Webster trained herself to continue to perform and she did so until 1942, when the show ended because of the war. Next, Lavetta introduces the life of Nancy Reagan (American, 1921–2016) after she left the White House, including the establishment of the Nancy Reagan Foundation and the IRS investigation into the Reagans' gifts and loans. They also explore Reagan's role in politics and her rankings in the list of First Ladies. The conversation delves into the hypocrisy and privilege of the Reagans, particularly in relation to the AIDS crisis and welfare fraud. The hosts highlight the demonization of black and brown people and the erasure of poor white people in Reagan's legacy.
