This morning we contrast the Midrashic method of interpreting Torah vs. an understanding based on a close, deep reading of the text itself. Using this second approach, we analyze why Yitzchak is chosen instead of Yishmael, and Yaakov instead of Eisav, in order to identify an essential understanding of Judaism, which is particularly relevant in Israel today, and across the Jewish world at all times. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
