Dr. Andrew Huberman: Exploring the Mind-Body Connection, The Power of Breathwork, Rewiring the Brain
Shownotes:
In this episode, Dr. Andrew Huberman, the brain warrior, shares how the mind and body have an intrinsic connection that significantly impacts our well-being, the use of technology in studying emotions and the nervous system, how neurogenerative compounds have a significant impact on brain function and circadian rhythm, and how understanding these relationships can pave the way for new treatments for neurological diseases.
We also discuss the role of breathing patterns in regulating the autonomic nervous system and the importance of rest in overall neurobiological health.
Andrew Huberman, Ph.D., is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the department of neurobiology, and by courtesy, psychiatry and behavioral sciences at Stanford School of Medicine. He is the founder of the Huberman Lab, and has made numerous significant contributions to the fields of brain development, brain function and neural plasticity, which is the ability of our nervous system to rewire and learn new behaviors, skills and cognitive functioning.
What we discuss:
(0:11:08) - How Andrew’s research has shifted from animal models to humans, discussing the role of AI in studying human emotions and the nervous system
(0:21:36) - The importance of breathing for autonomic control, the relationship between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, and how certain breathing patterns can quickly shift our autonomic nervous system
(0:32:53) - The impact of breathing on stress and immunity, and how breathwork can help the body.
(0:37:19) - How Andrew Huberman got into visual neuroscience
(0:44:28) - The importance of light for brain function and its impact on our circadian rhythm, and the role of certain cells in the eyes in setting the level of alertness or sleepiness in the brain.
(0:56:34) - The potential of neurogenerative compounds to support the brain's ability to regenerate and change in response to experience, the importance of focus and rest to achieve this plasticity, and the role of dopamine in triggering plasticity.
