Alvin Abreu's journey is the stuff of movies. Born to Dominican immigrants in inner-city Lynn, Abreu didn't speak English until he started grade school. He lost his father to cancer, then watched his mother battle the disease, and became a father himself all before graduation high school. With a passiom for basketball but no college offers, the deck seemed stacked against him. Undeterred, Abreu worked his way to a Division I scholarship at the University of New Hampshire, where he earned two degrees while becoming one of the greatest players in school history, all while remaining a devoted, full time father. Now the head coach at Lynn English high school, Abreu sat down to talk about his long and winding road, and why he's giving back to his hometown.
