(Replay) Plymouth Mail Truck Robbery 1962-The equivalent of 13 Million in cash stolen, and never recovered
Send us a text
In August 1962 the U.S.Postal Service wanted to save money on armored car services. Instead, they had a truck driver and one guard transport money, in mail trucks from Cape Cod post offices, to the Federal Reserve Bank in Boston. What could go wrong? It took local criminals about three weeks to rob this truck of millions. The media coverage was intense and the government sent postal inspectors to investigate. Local gangsters were not impressed deriding them as "Stamp Police". A record breaking reward of $150,000 (1.3 Million today) was presented, but never claimed. The defendants, tied to Rhode Island organized crime were ultimately acquitted at trial. This case remains unsolved and no money was ever recovered.
