MiKeitz and Chanukah - December 14, 2023

This evening we trace the origin of the Menorah image back to a surprising source, from Abe Mezrich. We balance this insight with the understanding of Rabbi Yehuda Amital on Yosef's economic policy. We show how the prayer we add for Chanukah, Al HaNissim, is an answer to the prayer two paragraphs earlier (Retzei) asking God to accept our prayers and service. Finally, we explore how Chanukah "raises up" (from the word B'Ha'alot'chah) every Jew in every home. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law. ADATH is a modern orthodox synagogue community in suburban Montreal, providing Judaism for the next generation.
