Season 4 Podcast 190 The Stories of the New Testament, Matthew Ch 22:23-33, Pt 5, “The Abrahamic Covenant A.”
In the previous Podcast we discussed The Marriage Covenant and the Resurrection. In this Podcast we shall discuss The Abrahamic Covenant. It is necessary to understand the Abrahamic Covenant because it ties everything together, the Old Testament and the New Testament. In this and the following podcast I shall show how the Abrahamic Covenant is tied to everything in the previous podcast as well as how it is tied to the Ten Commandments, The Letters to the Seven Churches, and the coming of the New Jerusalem as recorded in the Book of Revelation. It is incredibly revealing. Let’s first turn to Matthew 22: 31-33 which is a direct reference to the Abrahamic Covenant in which the Savior ties the Abrahamic Covenant to the resurrection. Keep in mind as you listen to this and next week’s podcast that the Abrahamic Covenant, the eternal marriage covenant, and the resurrection are not separate things. I think of the words of Paul, “If in this life only we have hope in Christ we are of all men most miserable.”
“But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living. And when the multitude heard this, they were astonished at his doctrine.”
Of course, the Abrahamic Covenant began first with Abraham and then it was given to Isaac, the son of Abraham, and then to Jacob the Son of Isaac. And from Jacob we have the Twelve Tribes of Israel. Before examining the covenant, I shall first show how it applies to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, through scripture. All three prophets saw God. All three prophets received by revelation the promises of the Abrahamic Covenant. In other words, the Abrahamic Covenant came through the above Lineage. Abraham had many sons, but only through Isaac came the Abrahamic Covenant. Isaac’s oldest son was Esau, but only through Jacob the younger son came the Abrahamic Covenant. That is what is established in the following scriptures.
Genesis 17
“And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.”
Genesis 26
“And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar. And the Lord appeared unto him, and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of: Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father; And I will make thy seed to multiply as the stars of heaven, and will give unto thy seed all these countries; and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed.”
Genesis 28
“And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. Arise, go to Padan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother’s brother. And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.”
