The Incident
On the evening of August 23, 1989, Yusuf Hawkins and three friends traveled to the predominantly white neighborhood of Bensonhurst in Brooklyn. Unbeknownst to them, their arrival coincided with rumors that a Black teenager was dating a local white girl, leading to a racially charged atmosphere.
