Earlier this year, Drum Tower released “The Cage”, a two-part series looking into Uyghurs being silenced and controlled by Chinese authorities at home and abroad. As China pumps investment back into Xinjiang after the pandemic, stories of human rights abuses and forced labour get little traction in the news. As this year comes to a close, and the UN's universal periodic review by the Human Rights Council in 2024 under way, we’re re-running “The Cage” to highlight ongoing persecution of the Uyghurs.
In this first episode The Economist’s senior China correspondent Alice Su meets two Uyghurs, Nigara and Kewser, who have left China. What price do they each have to pay to stay in contact with their loved ones in China?
