Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), is defined as excessive bacteria in the small intestine. Originally it was believed to occur in only a small number of patients and now, clearly, this disorder is far more prevalent than previously thought. It’s estimated that 6-15% of apparently healthy people (that’s 20-51 million Americans and countless more world-wide) have it while 80% of people with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) have it for certain!
