Vitamin D Deficiency affects nearly every body system. Low vitamin D is a known risk for tooth decay, risk of obesity, and digestive conditions.
New evidence is showing the connection between vitamin D and the brain. The mechanism may lie in vitamin D’s crucial role in sleep.
Studies have found that a deficiency of vitamin D may be associated with an increased risk of sleep disorders, including poor sleep quality, shorter duration of sleep, and daytime sleepiness. One theory is that vitamin D plays a role in regulating circadian rhythms, which could affect sleep-wake cycles.
In a meta-analysis examining the relationship between vitamin D deficiency and sleep disorders, the results showed that serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D, a marker of vitamin D levels, were inversely associated with an increased risk of sleep disorders.
Another systematic review and meta-analysis found that vitamin D supplementation may improve sleep quality and total sleep time, particularly in people with sleep disorders.
Stasha Gominak is a neurologist who focusses on the link between sleep quality and vitamin D levels. Dr. Gominak emphasizes the importance of vitamin D in sleep quality and sleep regulation.
Low levels or a deficiency of vitamin D can lead to poor sleep quality and various sleep disorders, as well as other significant health issues. Her work suggests that optimizing vitamin D levels may play a role in improving sleep.
