This morning we return with a new insight to the question of why following the lunar calendar is the first Mitzvah God commands the entire Jewish People while they are still slaves in Egypt. Based on an essay by Rabbi Avigdor Nebenzahl, we explore the concept of Kedushat HaZman, the sanctity and unique character of every moment, different from the one before and after it, never to return. We see how this is connected to labor law and the right to strike, plus the invaluable insight of the Chofetz Chaim that life is like a postcard. Michael Whitman is the senior rabbi of ADATH Congregation in Hampstead, Quebec, and an adjunct professor at McGill University Faculty of Law.
