The Truth Behind Gear Reviews on YouTube: Can They Be Trusted? (And What to Look Out For)
In this episode of the podcast, I wanted to tackle the topic of YouTubers and gear reviews head on. As a channel that does quite a few gear videos, it's something I see a lot in comments on my videos, in Facebook groups, and pretty much everywhere. Can you trust YouTubers when they talk about gear?
Watch the full video for all the info, but let me just say that if you pay attention, you'll notice that I very seldom call anything a "gear review." To me, a gear review is something that is based on using a product in a variety of conditions for a long period of time. Also, if there's any bias (such as a free product given by a manufacturer to the content creator in exchange for the work it takes to create the video) there will always be inherent bias.
Instead of doing "gear reviews" on this channel, I focus more on sharing cool gear ideas with people, helping you see it in action, sharing things like how to assemble or use a piece of gear, and then usually finish up with my ideas for how I'm going to integrate that gear into my set up. I think there's value in that and I personally often go to YouTube just to learn more and see different gear "in the hands" of someone else. Hopefully you guys get value out of those videos too!
