Florida Deputy Charged with Aggravated Child Abuse After Alleged Assault on Daughter Over Tablet Use

A Florida deputy, identified as Tristan Chattic, faces charges of aggravated child abuse following a distressing incident involving his 13-year-old daughter's use of a tablet for homework assistance. The alleged assault occurred on Wednesday, prompting an immediate response from authorities and sparking concerns about domestic violence within law enforcement ranks.

According to the Volusia Sheriff's Office arrest affidavit, the incident unfolded when Chattic's daughter was using a tablet for her homework. She employed the device's Alexa feature to answer a question related to her studies, which seemingly triggered an explosive reaction from her father.

As detailed in the affidavit, Tristan Chattic allegedly unplugged the tablet in anger after his daughter used Alexa, setting off a chain of events that escalated dramatically. Eyewitness accounts suggest that he became extremely agitated, leading to a series of violent actions against his own child:

- Yelling at her
- Slapping her in the face
- Grabbing her hair
- Choking her
- Pushing her off her chair, causing her to hit her head on the floor
- Stepping on her back and hitting her with a belt while she was pinned down

Chattic's wife, who was present during the incident, corroborated these distressing details to law enforcement. She expressed concerns about her daughter's well-being and the recent volatility of her husband's behavior, emphasizing that while he had not previously been physically abusive, he exhibited significant mental and emotional abuse.

Following the incident, deputies learned that the Chattic residence had an internal video camera, although it did not record footage of the altercation. Due to the suspicious circumstances and the severity of the allegations, Tristan Chattic was taken into custody on Wednesday and subsequently released on Thursday after posting a $5,000 bond.

In response to the charges, the Orange County Sheriff's Office took immediate action, relieving Chattic of his duties without pay as the criminal case unfolds. Chattic, 39, had been employed by the OCSO since February 2015.

Orange County Sheriff John Mina addressed the situation, stating, "These are extremely serious criminal allegations. At the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, we hold our deputies to the highest ethical standards whether they are on duty or off duty. I have a zero-tolerance policy toward child abuse — or any form of domestic violence. These allegations will be thoroughly investigated, and the results of that investigation will be made public."

Tristan Chattic is scheduled for an arraignment on February 29 in Volusia County Circuit Court, where further legal proceedings will take place.
