Hope Doesn’t Back Down
“If I fall, I'll fall five feet four inches forward in the fight for freedom. I'm not backing off. “ - Fannie Lou Hamer
For those who don’t know, Fannie Lou Hamer was a civil rights activist in Mississippi. She is perhaps best known for the quote that she was sick and tired of being sick and tired.
Civil rights activists in those days faced the real threat of violence on a daily basis. They could be arrested and jailed over bogus charges. They were always at risk of being shot at, bombed, beaten, spat on, or lynched. Many of her peers were killed.
But she had a hope for a better future, for herself, her family and the world that would not let her give in, give up, or back down. She was determined to move forward no matter what. She knew she might fall. But if she did, it was going to be moving forward.
What hope keeps you moving forward? Peace be with you.
