Velma Barfield was an American serial killer who confessed to six murders but was convicted of one. She was the first woman executed by lethal injection. Barfield's life was marked by abusive relationships, drug abuse, and financial troubles. She targeted her victims by poisoning them with arsenic. Barfield became a devout Christian during her time on death row and spent her last days ministering to other prisoners. She was executed in 1984.
