If You Can See It
“He responded, "You have asked a hard thing; yet, if you see me as I am being taken from you, it will be granted you; if not, it will not." - 2 Kings 2:10
Elijah was perhaps the greatest and best known prophet of biblical times. His time on earth was drawing to a close. Elisha had been perhaps his closest protege and assistant. Elisha aspired to have a double portion of Elijah’s ability.
Such an ambitious request. Many of us are ambivalent about ambition. For good reason some ambition is toxic and dangerous. When ambition is grounded in the zero sum thinking that in order for me to win someone has to lose, people get hurt.
When our ambition is based on a positive vision of ourselves and the world around us, when our desire is to have a greater positive impact to make a greater contribution, nothing could be better.
This is the type of ambition Elisha aspired to… Yet, he still had to be able to see it for himself. He had to believe he was capable of it in order for it to happen.
And we must too. Peace be with you.
