Episode 183: Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003)

This week at The Film Club we’re talking about Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl! The film follows three protagonists: Elizabeth Swann daughter of Governor Weatherby Swann, William Turner a Blacksmith Apprentice, and Captain Jack Sparrow one of the best pirates around. The three are destined to meet each other, Elizabeth and Will meet as children when Will is involved in a shipwreck and the ship Elizabeth is on rescues him. The two grow up in the same port town and develop feelings for each other but can’t be together because of the different class statuses. When Elizabeth is proposed to by the newly promoted Commodore of the Navy the proposal is interrupted when Captain Jack Sparrow arrives and tries to commandeer one of the Naval Ships. After the ruckus Captain Jack causes in Port Royal things get worse later that night when the Black Pearl arrives to the Port and its pirate crew begins to pillage the town while ultimately kidnapping Elizabeth. Will is desperate to rescue Elizabeth and reaches out to Captain Jack to help him and will inevitably learn he and Jack aren’t so different after all.
