Have you ever heard of the term micro-aggression? Microaggression refers to actions or words said to a population(usually to a minority population based on race, gender, or religion) to express bias, stereotypes, or negativity by a person, people, or an organization. During this session, we will use three mindfulness techniques to navigate our responses to microaggressions. Here is an outline of the podcast.
Mindfulness Techniques:
- Introduce mindfulness as a tool to navigate and respond to microaggressions. Mindfulness doesn’t seek to eliminate these challenges but helps us build resilience and respond more effectively.
- Breathing Exercises: We will use simple yet effective breathing exercises. We will concentrate on using our breath as our anchor. It is essential to stay calm and centered when faced with microaggressions.
- Visualization: Eartha will guide you through imagery exercises. The goal is to help participants imagine a safe and peaceful place to retreat to mentally when microaggression is encountered.
- Mindful self-refection: Specific mindfulness awareness activities are suitable for adults and children, which help participants become aware of unintentional social cues that may be copied by individuals who desire to become accepted in a social group.
- Connect Mindfulness to Compassion: Highlight the link between mindfulness and compassion. Encourage listeners to cultivate self-compassion and empathy, not only for themselves but also for those who may unknowingly perpetuate microaggressions.
- Encourage Consistency: It is important to consistently practice mindfulness to build resilience and healthy mental, physical, and spiritual responses. It takes time and regular practice to develop these skills.
By combining a clear understanding of microaggressions with practical mindfulness techniques, your podcast can offer valuable insights and actionable steps for individuals to navigate these challenges with greater resilience and compassion.
