Like a lot of people, Liz Cottriel has a somewhat irrational fear of super deep water—thalassaphobia. Her friend Julie McSorley does not have that fear. In November, 2020, on a paddle near San Luis Obispo, a group of humpback whales began feeding all around their kayak. Big as a fire truck and twice as heavy, Humpback whales have a reputation as gentle giants, that don’t bother humans. But they’re not. And they do. Producer Aaron Scott reports on why, since then, Liz’s fear seems a whole lot more reasonable.
