ERRR #088. Kristian Still on Test-enhanced Learning
Kristian Still is a deputy head academic with over 20 years’ experience as a head teacher and senior leader. Kristian has a keen interest in education leadership, evidence-informed practice, and ed tech and has done a phenomenal job of combining the evidence on topics such as retrieval, spaced practice, interleaving, and successive relearning in his excellent book test-enhanced learning, a practical guide to improving academic outcomes for all students.
This is an absolute passion area for me, and especially the idea of empowering students to take charge of their own learning through retrieval practice that can be used as a way to boost their metacognition around the security of their own knowledge, and use that to direct their future learning.
For me, learning how to personally do this has unlocked learning in a way that’s been the foundation for much of the work I’ve done such as building the knowledge to run this podcast, collecting ideas to write my books, speaking foreign languages, and even remembering peoples names.
I’m hopeful that this podcast will move our profession a little closer to a better harnessing of the power of the power of desirable difficulties, like retrieval, spacing, and successive re-learning, to support our students’ achievement
