93. ⛷️ Lessons Learned from Skiing Black Diamonds
It's Sunday evening, so we have another skiing post ⛷️
Seeing that today was probably my last day in the mountains this winter, I wanted to share a couple reflection points from my Black Diamond experiences that I’m hoping could be useful for you in one way or another (or at least somewhat entertaining)
(Please keep in mind - I’ve only been skiing 7-8 times spread out over the last four years, so the thought of even considering a Black Diamond was completely out of question even three weeks ago 😂)
⛷️ Black Diamond bullet point summary:
• The first attempts have been exactly what you would imagine: frightening, paralyzing, heart-racing - all the things
• They have also not been pretty by any stretch of the imagination
• I’ve been stuck, fallen, paralyzed, immobile, and any direction a ski can go, it’s gone
• I’ve questioned how I was going to get down
• And questioned how I even got there in the first place
• Then had plenty of passionate self-talks with myself…
But after making it down and living to tell the tale, here are some major takeaways (and things I’m genuinely proud of):
• I made it down. Every time - no matter how it looked or felt
• Each time got a little bit better - and a little less scary
• Each time has become easier to drop in
• And my courage to go for it, and just figure it out in real time, has continued to improve
• And it’s THIS that I’ve been so excited about - the ability to continue taking action in the face of fear
Because it just feels so good knowing I went for it, reagrdless of the outcome or results. And in my opinion, this is a phenomenal approach to life.
Focusing on the doing, the process, the continuous improvement, and the love of the journey.
Versus being so caught up on the end results, the perfect run, and comparison to others.
My second attempt was better than my first.
And to me, that's all that mattered.
Whatever you’ve gone through, are going through, or will go through in life - we are undoubtedly going to experiences similar emotions:
Fear
Paralysis
Anxiety
Nervousness
You name it, you’ve probably gone through it. And here you still are. Telling YOUR own tale.
So just remember that the next time you’re faced with a challenge, setback, or fear. You got this.
Because it feels pretty dang good to get through to the other side, while growing and embracing the change throughout the process.
It’s these challenges that enable us to not just go through the experience, but to grow through it.
I’m leaving the mountains this year a far better skier by the conscious decision, repeated over time, to go for it.
And choose growth.
Just as you can, and have done, as well.
