'One Dream to make a Better Life' with Caroline Verkaik
Born and raised in Kenya, Caroline Verkaik moved to the United States in search of greater opportunities like most immigrants.
Her first job in the US was a print operator and then as a lab analyst for Eastman Kodak, then a flight attendant with Executive Jet Aviation where she was flight attendant of the year, then contestant coordinator, and one of the chief negotiators- sitting down with presidents, prime ministers and government officials around the world with Mrs/Miss America and Mrs World.
She married her husband David in 2002, and together they have six teenage children. She's also the CEO of Voice of our Child an Organization offering a rare and unique mentorship program to teens 6 -17 years old. The program for kids in the US includes sponsored international travel for humanitarian work to Kenya to open their minds to greater appreciation of the life they have, compared to kids in a first world country.
Her organisation 'Voice of Our Child' was founded in 2016 through the pain and shock of realizing that her oldest daughter, then 20 years old, had been struggling with depression and suicidal idealization. In Caroline's own words
"I became a mother on a mission. I did not want any parent to miss out on the signs of depression like I did nor to have any child struggle in silence".
This is an incredibly powerful episode of one little girls dreams to leave Kenya and build a better life for herself. We delve into a sheer drive and struggle like no other for change, and hear about the moment she learned of her daughter struggles with mental health which spurned her on to her life mission.
