The Fast and the Furious is Point Break with cars
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas hit the beach in Southern California, where they try their hand at surfing and make friends with a surfer who is secretly undercover as a cop looking for a group of bank robbers that he suspects are fellow beach bums.
It's our third week of BREAKING THE LAW, BREAKING THE LAW crime season, and we are finally talking about the film that inspired The Fast and the Furious, Kathryn Bigelow's 1991 surf crime-action classic, POINT BREAK, starring Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze, Lori Petty and Gary Busey.
Join us, as we hit the waves and talk about how this film was developed, James Cameron's connection to it, Patrick Swayze's thrill-seeking ways, Keanu's football skills, and plenty of Fast and Furious similarities. It's quite amazing how Kathryn Bigelow took what was meant to be a silly action thriller and made it into a low-key dissection of toxic masculinity and male relationships.
"If you want the ultimate, you've got to be willing to pay the ultimate price. It's not tragic to die doing what you love."
