Falcon and Hawkeye get sent to The Hurt Locker
This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas get sent back to the front, this time tagging alongside a tactical bomb defusing unit in the streets of Baghdad, and find themselves in a tight situation with their reckless squad leader.
Now that the spooky season is over, we're back to finish off our WAR, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR? HOLLYWOOD MOVIES! arc, with Kathryn Bigelow's 2008 Iraqi war thriller, THE HURT LOCKER. Winner of the Best Picture and Best Director (making Bigelow the first female director to win both), the film stars future Marvel superheroes Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie, in their breakthrough performances, as two members of an elite three-man bomb disposal unit in Iraq.
The film is full of tension and thrills, and feels authentic with Bigelow's decision to film in the Middle East, using an almost documentary style of filmmaking. Does it hold up and stand out as one of the best in the Modern War era of films? Tune in to find out...
