This week on The Pod Charles Cinecast, presented by The Prince Charles Cinema, our hosts Jonathan Foster and Fil Freitas are back on the front and ready to storm the beaches of Normandy for some Camembert and andouillette d'Alençon.
It's Week 2 of WAR, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?... HOLLYWOOD MOVIES arc – where we will be talking all things war movies and war adjacent movies. We've done World War I and lo and behold, there was a second one of those monstrous events. We'll see not one, but two World War II movies in this season. Double the war, double the us talking about movies from said war.
First up, we've got a film from a master of filmmaking, as well as a master of making films set during World War II – Steven Spielberg. It's none other than his gritty 1998 Academy Award-winning D-Day epic, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, starring Tom Hanks, Matt Damon, Tim Sizemore, Edward Burns, Vin Diesel and so many other great actors.
The film kicks us off with one of the most intense war sequences ever laid on film, and then sends us into a patriotic-filled adventure of sacrifice and brotherhood. It's quite the astonishing feat.
War sucks, but Hollywood sure does love to exploit them for movies. Tune in as we become part of the problem...
